In Hinduism, the month of Sawan is considered extremely auspicious because Lord Shiva holds this month—Shravan—very dear. During this holy month, devotees worship and serve Lord Shiva with greater spiritual fervor than usual.

During this period, devotees visit temples daily and perform *Jalabhishek* (ritual bathing with water) on the *Shivling*. But can Lord Shiva be worshipped during Sawan even without a *Shivling*? Let us find out from the astrologers at Astropatri.

How to worship without a *Shivling* during Sawan?
According to Astropatri's astrologers, the *Shiva Purana* clearly states that if a stone or metal *Shivling* is unavailable at home or in a temple, Shiva worship can still be performed with complete devotion. The alternatives are as follows:

Worship of *Parthiv Shivling*
During Sawan, it is considered best to worship a small *Shivling* made on the spot using soil, cow dung, or soil mixed with *Gangajal* (water from the Ganges).

Worship of an image or picture
One can worship a picture or image of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

Mental worship (*Mansopchar Puja*)
Scriptures regard *Mansopchar Puja*—or mental worship—as the supreme form of worship; in this practice, one performs the *Abhishek* and worship of Lord Shiva entirely within the mind through deep meditation.

Offering water at the roots of a tree
One can also attain the full spiritual benefits of Shiva worship by offering water at the roots of a *Belpatra* (wood apple) tree or a *Peepal* tree.

The importance of devotion (*Bhava*)
Shiva resides in devotion, not merely in a physical form. If you do not have a *Shivling*, you can still receive Mahadev's immense grace by simply creating a *Parthiv Shiv* (an idol made of earth) or by performing mental worship with a heart full of devotion.

If performing rituals at home is not possible during Sawan, make sure to visit a temple and offer whatever you can afford to the *Shivling*. It is said that Lord Shiva can be pleased with just a single vessel of water.

Lord Shiva is compassionate and simple by nature. Unlike other deities, He is satisfied even if one approaches Him empty-handed.
