Be sure to perform these 4 rituals on Chhoti Diwali; learn about the traditions—from the 'Yam Deepdaan' to lighting 14 earthen lamps..

Narak Chaturdashi: Dos and Don’ts – The festival of Narak Chaturdashi is celebrated one day before the main festival of Diwali; it is also known as 'Chhoti Diwali' (Small Diwali). According to the Hindu calendar, this festival falls on the *Chaturdashi* (fourteenth day) of the *Krishna Paksha* (waning phase of the moon) in the month of Kartika. On this day, it is considered especially significant to worship Lord Krishna, Lord Shiva, Lord Rama, Hanuman Ji, and Goddess Kali. Additionally, there is a tradition of worshipping Yamraj, the deity of death, and lighting a *diya* (lamp) in his honor.

According to religious beliefs, lighting a lamp for Yamraj on the evening of Narak Chaturdashi dispels the fear of untimely death and brings happiness and prosperity into one's life. It is also considered essential to follow certain religious guidelines on this day. Let us explore which practices are considered auspicious on Chhoti Diwali and which mistakes should be avoided.

What is considered auspicious to do on Narak Chaturdashi?

Oil Massage and Bathing: There is a tradition of waking up before sunrise on this day, massaging the body with mustard oil, and then taking a bath. It is believed that doing so enhances good fortune and invites the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi.

Cleaning the Home and Place of Worship: On Chhoti Diwali, ensure that your home—especially the area designated for worship—is thoroughly cleaned. It is also highly significant to worship Goddess Kali according to the prescribed rituals; this is believed to provide protection against negative forces and fear.

Lighting 14 Lamps: It is customary to light 14 lamps in various parts of the home on Narak Chaturdashi. Furthermore, worshipping Lord Krishna is also considered to be highly auspicious and rewarding.

Lighting a Lamp for Yamraj: Do not forget to light a lamp in honor of Yamraj. It is believed that this ensures his blessings upon the family members and removes the fear of an untimely death.

What should be avoided on Narak Chaturdashi?

Avoid *tamasic* (impure/heavy) food: On the day of Chhoti Diwali, one should refrain from consuming any form of *tamasic* food, including non-vegetarian items and alcohol. Consuming *sattvic* (pure/wholesome) food on this day is considered auspicious.

Do not cut hair or nails: According to religious beliefs, cutting one's hair or nails on Naraka Chaturdashi is considered inappropriate; therefore, such activities should be avoided on this day.

Keep the southern direction clean: Ensure that the southern part of your home remains clean and tidy. Avoid leaving this area dirty, and observe the prescribed religious protocols when performing rituals related to Yamraj (the Lord of Death).

Do not harm living beings: Causing distress or harm to any animal, bird, or other living creature on this day is considered inauspicious. Treat all living beings with kindness and love.
