The Significance of Akshaya Tritiya
According to the traditions of Akshaya Tritiya, any meritorious deed performed on this day yields 'Akshaya' (eternal or imperishable) results. On this day, one should engage in activities such as charity, meditation, bathing in the holy Ganges, and performing religious rituals. According to the scriptures, initiating any new endeavor on this day brings prosperity. The Puranas mention that it was on the very day of Akshaya Tritiya that Mother Ganges descended from the heavens to the mortal realm.
Akshaya Tritiya also symbolizes the dawn of a new era. Religious belief holds that the Satya, Treta, and Dvapara Yugas—all three—commenced on the day of Akshaya Tritiya. Every year on this auspicious day, the portals of the Gangotri and Yamunotri temples in Uttarakhand are opened, thereby marking the official commencement of the Char Dham pilgrimage.
