According to the Narada Purana, if these thoughts cross your mind during worship, you do not reap the benefits..

The sentiment or state of mind with which we remember God significantly impacts our lives. Even if one performs rituals diligently, the outcome depends on the devotion and intent behind the worship. The *Narada Purana* elaborates on this extensively.

Thoughts constantly ebb and flow in our minds. What we think while worshipping is crucial. Let us look at the mindsets that prevent us from reaping the benefits of worship.

**Greed for Material Things**
Greed is a detrimental emotion; it drives a person to commit various transgressions. If one’s mind is consumed by the desire to acquire something during worship, that act of worship will never be fruitful. One should completely surrender oneself to God during worship, but greed hinders this surrender.

**Absence of Fear**
Worshipping out of fear—perhaps after committing a wrongdoing—yields no spiritual reward. Such worship is considered impure. While it might temporarily calm your mind, this manner of remembering God actually displeases Him.

**Worship Without Ignorance**
There is a prescribed method for worship; failing to follow it means you do not receive the intended spiritual benefit. Often, people sit for worship merely to go through the motions, but such rituals achieve nothing. The *Narada Purana* states that one should remember God with a sincere heart, for that constitutes the highest form of worship.

**Worship at Another's Behest**
Worshipping simply because someone else told you to is futile. Doing so makes the act feel like a burden; it becomes a chore you wish to finish quickly just to be done with it. True worship, however, is an act of contemplation. It is the act of remembering God and expressing gratitude to Him with a joyful and wholehearted spirit. Therefore, performing regular worship yields no fruit; it is merely a habit. Worship means performing good deeds while keeping God in mind, and the results you receive are a consequence of your actions alone. Hence, when you worship, do so with your whole heart; otherwise, do not do it at all.
