Why is Hanuman worshipped a day before Diwali? There are 3 major reasons for this..

Diwali Hanuman Puja 2026: It is customary to perform Hanuman Puja one day before Diwali each year. On this day, during the 'Nishita Muhurat' (a specific auspicious time at night), Lord Hanuman—the son of the Wind God (Pavanputra)—is worshipped. There are three significant reasons for performing Hanuman Puja before Diwali; furthermore, there is also a special connection to Lord Shiva. According to the Hindu calendar (Panchang), this Hanuman Puja is observed on the 'Chaturdashi' (fourteenth day) of the waning phase (Krishna Paksha) of the month of Kartika. By performing the worship according to the prescribed rituals and reciting the Hanuman Chalisa, one can receive his blessings, which help in overcoming all troubles and crises.

Why is Hanuman Puja performed before Diwali?
According to mythology, after Lord Rama defeated Ravana and rescued Mother Sita from Lanka, his 14-year exile came to an end. Upon his return to Ayodhya, the residents celebrated by lighting lamps. That day was the 'Amavasya' (new moon) of the month of Kartika, which is why Diwali is celebrated on this day every year. Pleased by Lord Hanuman’s devotion and dedication, Lord Rama blessed him, decreeing that he would be worshipped one day before Diwali. Since then, Hanuman Puja has been observed on the day preceding Diwali.

In some parts of the country, 'Hanuman Janmotsav' (the birth anniversary of Lord Hanuman) is celebrated on the 'Chaturdashi' of the Krishna Paksha of the month of Kartika, which falls one day before Diwali. This is another reason why Hanuman Puja is performed at this time.

On the 'Chaturdashi' of the Krishna Paksha of Kartika, the influence of negative forces tends to increase significantly; therefore, it is customary to perform Hanuman Puja on this day to seek protection from them. Through the grace of Bajrangbali (Lord Hanuman), all kinds of ailments, afflictions, and crises are dispelled.

The connection between Hanuman Puja and Lord Shiva
Hanuman Puja takes place during the 'Nishita Muhurat' on the 'Chaturdashi' of the Krishna Paksha of Kartika. This day also marks the monthly 'Shivratri' of the month of Kartika, during which Lord Shiva is worshipped—specifically during the 'Nishita Muhurat'. In fact, the date for Shivratri is determined based on this very 'Muhurat'. Lord Hanuman is considered an 'avatar' (incarnation) of Rudra—a manifestation of Lord Shiva—and is thus worshipped on this Kartika Shivratri.
