Newborn Sleep: If a newborn is asleep and suddenly smiles, moves their lips, or makes a soft sound, parents immediately take notice. Sometimes, the baby might make a face that looks like crying, only to calm down and fall back asleep a few seconds later. Such moments can be surprising for new parents. They might wonder: what is the baby dreaming about? Is something wrong, or is this normal? In reality, the way newborns sleep is quite different from adults.

Their sleep patterns are still developing, and it is common to observe facial expressions, movements of the hands and legs, and small sounds while they sleep. Not every smile or sound necessarily indicates a specific dream.
How does newborn sleep differ from adult sleep?
Newborns do not immediately grasp the difference between day and night. In the early weeks, their sleep is broken up into short intervals; they sleep for a while, wake up to feed, and then go back to sleep.
Why do they smile in their sleep?
Many parents see their baby smiling in their sleep and assume they are having a pleasant dream. However, this isn't always the case. In the newborn stage, smiling is often just part of normal facial activity during sleep. A baby might suddenly smile, furrow their brows, or move their lips while sleeping. These movements may be linked to their developing nervous system and the various stages of sleep.
Why does the baby make sounds while sleeping?
Newborns can make a variety of sounds while asleep. Sometimes there is a soft, humming noise; at other times, the baby might seem to groan or suddenly make a sound resembling a cry for a few seconds.
Not every sound indicates distress.
A baby's body does not remain completely still while sleeping. Their breathing rate may also fluctuate, appearing faster at times and slower at others. You may also notice the baby making various facial expressions and soft sounds during this time. In such instances, there is no need to pick the baby up immediately at every little sound. If the baby is breathing comfortably and settles down again shortly, you can simply observe them for a few moments to assess the situation.
What to do if the baby suddenly cries in their sleep?
If the baby suddenly starts crying while asleep, first check whether they have actually woken up or are still asleep. Often, a baby cries for a few seconds, calms down on their own, and drifts back to sleep. If the baby continues to cry, check for common needs such as hunger, a wet diaper, or discomfort due to heat or cold. Gently stroking the baby and speaking in a soothing voice can also help.

What signs require attention?
Do not dismiss symptoms as normal sleep activity if you notice clear breathing difficulties, the lips or face turning blue, repeated unusual jerking movements, or if the baby remains unusually lethargic for an extended period. In such cases, it is best to consult a pediatrician immediately. Patience is key to understanding a newborn's sleep; not every smile indicates a dream, and not every sound signals distress. Over time, parents learn to recognize their baby's sleep patterns and various cues.
