In Hinduism, there are a total of 24 Ekadashis each year, each holding its own unique significance. However, 'Indira Ekadashi,' which falls during the *Krishna Paksha* (waning phase of the moon) of the Ashwin month, is considered particularly special. This is because it is associated with one's ancestors (*Pitris*). Occurring during the *Shradh Paksha* period, this Ekadashi is deemed highly sacred for performing *Pitru Tarpan* (offering water to ancestors) and *Shradh* rituals.

If your household is plagued by unexplained troubles or you are grappling with the effects of *Pitru Dosha* (ancestral affliction), simple remedies involving the lighting of lamps on this Ekadashi can be of great help. This year, Indira Ekadashi falls tomorrow, October 6, 2026. Let us explore where it is considered auspicious to light a lamp on this day.
1. Remedy at the Peepal Tree
If you wish to be liberated from *Pitru Dosha*, make sure to light a lamp filled with sesame oil or pure *ghee* beneath a Peepal tree on the evening of Indira Ekadashi. According to the scriptures, deities reside within the Peepal tree. It is believed that performing this single act facilitates easy relief from ancestral debt (*Pitru Rin*) and brings peace and contentment to the souls of one's ancestors.
2. Remedy at the Main Entrance
Ensure a lamp is lit at the main entrance of your home on the night of Ekadashi. It is believed that the light at the doorway prevents the souls of ancestors from losing their way. This lamp also invites positive energy into the home.
3. Remedy in the Kitchen
The kitchen is considered the most sacred space dedicated to Goddess Annapurna. Lighting a lamp in the kitchen on the night of Ekadashi is highly recommended; this pleases the ancestors and invokes their blessings.
4. Lighting a Lamp by the Riverbank
In the *Puranas*, rivers are revered as manifestations of the Divine Mother (Goddess). Offering a lit lamp (*Deepdan*) on the banks of the Ganga, Yamuna, or any sacred river on this day helps ancestors attain the divine realm. It is believed that if a river is inaccessible or you cannot visit one, you can simply fill a vessel or *Kalash* with water at home and place a lamp beside it.
5. Light a lamp near Mother Tulsi
Tulsi is extremely dear to Shri Hari. Lighting a lamp near the Tulsi plant in the evening pleases Lord Vishnu very quickly. Moreover, when Lord Vishnu’s grace is bestowed, the souls of ancestors naturally find peace.

6. Offer a lamp at a temple or shrine
Make sure to light a lamp at any nearby Vishnu temple. Doing so washes away sins committed unknowingly. Additionally, it paves the way for the ancestors to attain *Moksha* (salvation).
