As the name implies, the "evil eye" refers to a malevolent or harmful gaze. It is known by various names across almost all religions worldwide. The concept of the evil eye is ancient; it is believed that an envious look can leave a person exhausted, unlucky, and unwell. The evil eye is often considered to be invisible and insidious in nature.

Over time, diverse beliefs and perceptions regarding the evil eye have evolved within Indian society. It is viewed not merely as a cause of mental or physical ailments but also as a source of financial and social crises in one's life.
While numerous remedies exist to ward off the evil eye and negative energy, five specific methods are commonly practiced across all regions of India. Vastu Shastra also recognizes these measures as effective for alleviating *Vastu Dosh* (architectural or spatial imbalances). Let us explore these remedies:
1. The Salt Ritual
In Vedic astrology, every object is associated with a specific planet; salt is linked to the Moon and Venus. While the Moon governs the mind, emotions, and the water element, Venus is associated with beauty, prosperity, and charm. Both Vedic astrology and Vastu Shastra consider salt to be one of the most effective remedies for dispelling the evil eye.
How to remove the evil eye using salt: First, take a small amount of salt in your hand. Close your fist and rotate it three times over your head. Afterward, dispose of the salt by letting it flow away in water. Performing this ritual is believed to resolve issues caused by the evil eye; additionally, the salt absorbs the negative energy surrounding you.
2. The Red Chili Ritual
According to Vedic astrology, red chilies are associated with the planet Mars. Chilies possess both *Tamas* (inertia/darkness) and *Rajas* (passion/activity) qualities. In many parts of India, rituals involving red chilies are still performed today to ward off the evil eye and negative energy.
For this ritual, red chilies are waved over the head of the person affected by the evil eye; the chilies are believed to absorb the person's invisible, inauspicious energy. Afterward, the chilies are burned in a fire. In Hindu beliefs, fire is considered a symbol of purification.
3. Camphor Ritual
Camphor is considered sacred in Hinduism, as it is used in religious activities and worship. It is believed that the aroma of camphor helps reduce distressing energy. 'Bhimseni' camphor is commonly used in households to protect against the evil eye.
Bhimseni camphor possesses specific destructive properties (*marak gun*). It is precisely because of these properties that it is highly effective in eliminating negative energy.
Method of removing the evil eye using camphor: A piece of camphor is held in the right hand and waved clockwise three times around the affected person—from feet to head and back down. Then, the camphor is placed on the floor and set alight.
4. Ritual Involving a Black Thread
In many Indian households, it is still believed that a black thread tied around the wrist protects against negative energy and the evil eye. Whether worn by a newborn infant or an adult, the black thread offers protection from both the evil eye and negative energy.
In some regions, this black thread is known as '*Kala Dora*'. It is typically tied around the wrist, ankle, or sometimes the waist. It holds deep significance in Indian spiritual traditions and Vedic astrology.
In astrology, the color black is associated with the planet Saturn (*Shani*). Saturn is considered a stern planet that teaches life lessons through the challenges one faces. It is believed that wearing a black thread on the wrist provides relief from the adverse effects of Saturn.

5. Bathing with salt water
It is believed that a person affected by the evil eye should bathe in water mixed with a small amount of black salt. This remedy works to cleanse the individual's energy; it acts as a protective shield that safeguards against the evil eye while purifying one's aura.
