It has been 8 months since Sonakshi Sinha and Zaheer Iqbal got married, but neither of them ever discussed religion. Now they have broken their silence on this matter.

Sonakshi Sinha and Zaheer Iqbal's interfaith marriage garnered a lot of discussion last year. Both of them put their love and family's reaction in front of everyone but never discussed religion. Now Sonakshi has spoken openly about her relationship, she said that religion was never an issue in their relationship and neither did anyone ask each other to change religion.

'He imposed his religion on me...'

In an interview with Hauterfly, Sonakshi spoke on this matter. She said, 'We were not thinking about religion. We are two people who love each other and want to get married and that's what we did. He is not imposing his religion on me and I am also not imposing my religion on him. We never even discussed religion. We don't sit and talk about it. Instead, we understand each other's cultures by appreciating them. There are some traditions in his house and some in my house. I respect him and his culture, just like he respects me and my family. This is the right way.'

Why did they get married under the Special Marriage Act?

Sonakshi further explained why she decided to get married under the Special Marriage Act. Which allows persons of different religions to marry without religious conversion. He said, 'The best way for us to get married was under the Special Marriage Act, where I did not have to change my religion as a Hindu woman and he remained the same as a Muslim man. Two loving people, coming together in marriage, was the most important thing. The question of conversion never arose. We love each other and that is enough.'

The love story of both started in 2017

Sonakshi and Zaheer were in a relationship for seven years. Both got married on June 23, 2024, this is the same date when they started dating in 2017. They celebrated this special day with a grand party with their close friends and family. Announcing her marriage, Sonakshi shared an emotional post. He wrote- 'Seven years ago today (23.06.2017) we saw love in its purest form in each other's eyes and decided to hold on to it. Today, that love has guided us through all the challenges and successes... to this moment, where with the blessings of both our families and both our Gods... we are now husband and wife.'
