Pitru Paksha: If you see these signs at home, understand that your ancestors are displeased..

Gaya-ji is known as the city of salvation (*Moksha*). Performing *Pind Daan* (a ritual offering) for ancestors here liberates them from the cycle of birth and death. It is believed that the souls of ancestors wander in this world of worldly attachments (*Maya*); performing *Pind Daan* in Gaya grants them liberation and leads them to heaven. In Sanatan Dharma, ancestors are revered on par with deities; therefore, *Shraddh* rituals are performed during *Pitru Paksha* to appease and satisfy their souls.

It is believed that if ancestors are displeased, it can cause turmoil in one's life. For a happy life, it is essential that our ancestors remain content. There are certain signs indicating that our ancestors may be displeased with us. Often, when a family faces persistent troubles—such as tasks remaining incomplete, failure to secure a job, delays in marriage, inability to conceive, frequent domestic quarrels, or an inability to save money—these are considered symptoms of displeased ancestors or *Pitru Dosh* (ancestral affliction).

What do the *Acharyas* of Gaya-ji say?
Pandit Raja Acharya of the Gaya Mantralaya Ramacharya Vedic Pathshala explains that during *Pitru Paksha*, certain signs within the household reveal if ancestors are displeased. For instance, if you face obstacles in every task you undertake and nothing reaches completion, it is regarded as a sign of ancestral displeasure or *Pitru Dosh*. While minor domestic friction is common, constant daily discord suggests that your ancestors are unhappy with you. It is also believed that ancestral displeasure can create hurdles in conceiving children.

Furthermore, it is believed that if ancestors are displeased, a child in the family may face delays in marriage, or if the marriage does take place, the marital life remains unstable. There is also a belief that ancestral displeasure can make one vulnerable to sudden financial losses or accidents in life. Your money ends up being wasted on legal troubles (jail) or medical expenses. Other signs include sudden obstacles arising during auspicious events, children losing interest in their studies, Brahmins refusing to partake in the meal offered during *Shradh Paksha* (the fortnight dedicated to ancestors), and a lack of prosperity in the household.

What should be done if the ancestors are deeply displeased?
If the ancestors are severely displeased and the affliction has persisted for more than five years, one should visit Gaya and perform the *Tripindi Shradh* ritual. Performing *Pind Daan* at the *Vishnupad* shrine in Gaya can appease even ancestors from twenty-one generations back. If a visit to Gaya is not possible, the *Tripindi Shradh* can be performed at other holy sites such as Prayag, Kashi, Haridwar, Ujjain, or along the banks of the Narmada River. Organizing a *Bhagwat Katha* (recitation of the *Shrimad Bhagavatam*) or a complete reading of the text at home is also beneficial; listening to the *Bhagwat* liberates even restless spirits (*Pretas*), so displeased ancestors will certainly be appeased immediately.

If your parents are alive and you have caused them pain, fall at their feet and seek forgiveness; wash their feet and consume the water (*Charanamrit*), and serve them meals. If parents are appeased while alive, the deceased ancestors will automatically be appeased as well. The offering most cherished by ancestors is the *Pind*—a ball made of rice, barley, black sesame seeds, honey, ghee, and *Gangajal* (water from the Ganges). When a son performs *Pind Daan* at Gaya, ancestors spanning twenty-one generations attain liberation.
