What to do if a child develops a fever?
Pediatricians say that a fever after vaccination is normal and there's no need to panic. In this situation, you can give your child a dose of paracetamol, but in the correct dosage.
Doctors advise administering a dose of 10–15 mg per kilogram of body weight. For example, if a child weighs 5 kg, they should be given 0.5 to 0.75 mL of paracetamol. Similarly, a child weighing 10 kg can be given 1 to 1.5 mL.
Give only once every 6 hours (maximum 4 times a day), and do not give any other medication without a doctor's advice.
What to do if there is pain or swelling?
If there is pain or swelling at the injection site, gently apply an ice pack. If an ice pack is not available, a clean cloth soaked in cold water can be applied. This reduces both swelling and pain.
What to do if the child is crying?
Many children cry or become irritable after the vaccine. In such cases, hold them in your lap and caress them lovingly. The mother's touch soothes the child. If the child is breastfeeding, frequent breastfeeding also provides relief.
What to do if a lump forms?
Sometimes, a small lump or bump forms at the injection site. Doctors say there's no need to panic about this condition. It's normal and usually resolves on its own within 1 to 2 weeks.
What not to do?
Doctors advise against massaging the injection site or your child's feet for 48 hours after vaccination. This can increase pain and swelling.
This means that a mild fever, pain, or swelling after vaccination is nothing to worry about. This is a natural process in the body that indicates the vaccine is working. By paying attention to small things, you can quickly alleviate your child's discomfort.
