Parenting Tips: When there's a small child at home, parents keep an eye on every little thing. Parents note every detail: how many times the child nurses, how long they play, how long they sleep. But have you ever paid attention to your child's sleeping position? Sometimes, children fall into positions that can prove dangerous. So, let's learn from a pediatrician about the best sleeping position for a child and which positions they should avoid.
How is it best to put a child to sleep?
Pediatrician Ravi Malik recently shared a video on his Instagram handle regarding this. In the video, he explains that children should always be put to sleep on their backs (back sleeping position). This position is considered the safest because it facilitates the child's breathing.
Keep these things in mind:
Always put your child to sleep on a mattress that is neither too soft nor too hard.
Avoid using pillows on your baby. Newborns and young children have very delicate necks, so it's safest for them to sleep on a flat surface.
Also, there should be no toys, pillows, soft toys, or heavy blankets around the baby. These items can fall on the baby's face during sleep and obstruct breathing.
In what position should a baby never be put to sleep?
Answering this question, Dr. Malik says, “Babies should never be put to sleep on their stomachs. This position can cause breathing problems. In severe cases, it even increases the risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). Therefore, tummy time should be avoided altogether.”
Tummy time should only be given when the baby is awake and under parental supervision. Tummy time 2-3 times a day strengthens the baby's neck, back, and shoulder muscles. However, it's important to remember to never allow tummy time unsupervised.
By keeping these few simple things in mind, you can make your child's sleep not only comfortable but also completely safe.
