The song 'Mangal Rang' from Nitesh Tiwari's 'Ramayana' was recently released, with music composed by A.R. Rahman. Upon its release, one particular scene caught the audience's attention: it shows *ubtan* (a traditional paste) being applied to Lord Rama—portrayed by Ranbir Kapoor.

Notably, Sita—played by Sai Pallavi—is present while this ritual takes place. This has sparked a debate on social media, with opinions divided: some argue that, according to Hindu customs, the *haldi* (turmeric/pre-wedding) rituals for the bride and groom are typically performed separately, while others defend the scene, suggesting it is not a *haldi* ceremony but rather related to Rama’s coronation.
Is the scene inspired by Mithila culture?
Interestingly, it is neither of these; the scene is actually inspired by the 'Chuman' or 'Chumawan' ritual from Mithila culture, which is observed after weddings in parts of Bihar, eastern Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand.
What does this ritual entail?
In traditional Maithili and Awadhi wedding customs, a joint ceremony takes place after the wedding. The bride and groom sit together, and their mothers—along with other women—apply *ubtan* or turmeric paste to them as a gesture of blessing.
During this ritual, items such as turmeric, *durva* grass, and rice mixed with curd are used. The women of the family offer their love and blessings to the bride and groom.
A glimpse in the song 'Mangal Rang'
In the 'Mangal Rang' song, women are seen applying *ubtan* to Lord Rama (Ranbir Kapoor), while Sita looks on from the background. It is highly likely that this depicts the 'Chuman' or 'Chumawan' ritual.
The makers of 'Ramayana' released 'Mangal Rang' on Sunday. A.R. Composed by Rahman and sung by Arijit Singh and Shreya Ghoshal, this song depicts the love between Lord Ram and Mother Sita, as well as their sacred union.
