On Vijay Varma’s birthday, Prime Video announced the release date for Vijay’s upcoming original drama series, ‘Matka King’. The series is set to release on April 17. It has been directed by Nagraj Manjule—the filmmaker behind acclaimed movies like *Jhund* and *Sairat*—and written by Abhay Koranne. The series is set against the backdrop of the transforming Bombay of the 1960s. The narrative revolves around a cotton trader who introduces a new gambling system known as ‘Matka,’ eventually spreading this pastime—originally a hobby of the wealthy—across the entire nation.

The story of ‘Matka King’ centers on Brij Bhatti, a character portrayed by Vijay Varma. He is a sharp-witted and industrious cotton trader striving to carve out an identity and earn respect for himself amidst the changing landscape of 1960s Bombay. Set amidst bustling markets, *chawls* (tenements), and shifting power dynamics, the story begins with an ambitious idea that gradually establishes a distinct identity of its own, drawing in people from every stratum of society. As the stakes and expectations rise, the series unfolds as a thrilling saga of ambition, power, and the quest to find one's place in the world.

‘Matka King’ has been produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur, Nagraj Popatrao Manjule, Gargi Kulkarni, Ashwini Sidwani, and Ashish Aryan under the banners of Roy Kapur Films, Atpat, and SMR Productions. The series features Vijay Varma, Kritika Kamra, Sai Tamhankar, Siddharth Jadhav, Bhupendra Jadawat, and Gulshan Grover in lead roles. ‘Matka King’ will be available for streaming exclusively on Prime Video in India and across more than 240 countries worldwide starting April 17.
