Mahashivratri is an important festival of Hinduism, which is celebrated as the worship and veneration of Lord Shiva. There is a special importance of fasting on this day, the person who fasts with faith and devotion gets the blessings of Lord Shiva. The fast of Mahashivratri is a symbol of faith and devotion. On this day, while eating, one should keep in mind that whatever is eaten should keep the body light and healthy, so that the purpose of the fast can be fulfilled with full devotion. On this day, one should especially chant "Om Namah Shivaya". This gives peace to the soul of the person and the blessings of Lord Shiva. In this fast, special care has to be taken as to which things can be eaten and which cannot.

What can be eaten
Fruit diet
The fasting people can only take a fruit diet. On this day, fruits like bananas, apples, papaya, coconut, pomegranate, etc. are eaten. These give energy to the body as well as purify it.
Sabudana
Things made from sago, buckwheat flour, Rajgira, and rock salt can be eaten. Sabudana Khichdi and fasting dishes like Buckwheat Tikki or Rajgira Parathas are specially eaten on this day.
Milk and Makhana
Milk, Makhana, and fresh curd can also be consumed on this day. These substances provide coolness and energy to the body.
Ghee and Honey
Ghee and honey can also be consumed by fasting people on this day, which is beneficial for health.
What should not be eaten?
Non-vegetarian
Non-vegetarian food is completely prohibited on this day. The fasting person should consume only vegetarian food during the Shivratri fast.
Potatoes are also prohibited.
Things fried in oil and ghee should not be consumed during the fast on this day. This does not fulfill the purpose of the fast. Apart from this, potatoes should not be consumed during the fast of Mahashivratri. Although some people eat it at their convenience, it is generally prohibited on this day.
Coffee
Caffeine-containing substances like coffee should not be consumed during the fast. Water, coconut water, or fresh fruit juice should be consumed on this day.
