Maha Shivratri 2025: Mahashivratri is a very holy day of worship of Lord Shiva when devotees worship him with full devotion and perform Jalabhishek. This day is especially full of fasting, meditation, and devotion, in which devotees try to get the blessings of Shiva by following various methods. While offering water to Shivling, it is necessary to keep in mind some important rules so that the worship is done properly and its maximum benefit is obtained.

Method of offering water on Shivling
Some special rules are followed while performing the Jalabhishek of Lord Shiva. First of all, it is considered best to use Ganga water, pure water, or cow milk to offer water on Shivling. The stream of water should be slow and thin, as it is not considered appropriate to offer water with excessive velocity. While offering water, one should worship facing the east and it is considered auspicious to do it sitting or bending.
Holy items offered on Shivlinga
It is considered very auspicious to offer some special items along with Jalabhishek in the worship of Lord Shiva. These mainly include Belpatra, Dhatura, Aak flowers, and Shami leaves. All these materials are considered helpful in getting Shiva's blessings. However, Tulsi, vermilion, coconut, conch, and Ketaki flowers are not offered on Shivlinga, as they are considered forbidden in Shiva worship.
Importance of circumambulation of Shivlinga
It is also considered important to circumambulate the Shivlinga while worshiping Lord Shiva. While circumambulating, one should keep in mind that it should always be done from the left side and should be limited to only half circumambulation. The Jalhari of Shivlinga should not be crossed, as it is considered inauspicious.
