Lord Shiva—the *Devon ke Dev Mahadev* (God of Gods)—is worshipped with great reverence across India. The holy month of *Sawan* begins on July 30th. During this period, devotees offer various types of *bhog* (food offerings) and worship materials to please Bholenath. However, many people wonder what Lord Shiva actually prefers to eat and whether there is any mention of his favorite offerings in the scriptures or *shlokas* (verses).
According to religious beliefs, Lord Shiva is a deity of a very simple nature. He values true devotion and reverence far more than ostentation, opulence, or expensive offerings. This is precisely why he is called "Bholenath" (the Simple-hearted Lord). It is believed that Shiva showers his grace upon any devotee who remembers him with a sincere heart. Let us explore which items are considered dear to Lord Shiva and what the scriptures say about them.
What is offered to Bholenath?
*Belpatra* (leaves of the wood apple tree) holds special significance in the worship of Lord Shiva. Additionally, *Dhatura*, *Bhang* (cannabis), *Aak* flowers, *Gangajal* (water from the Ganges), milk, curd, honey, and seasonal fruits are also offered to him. Performing *Abhishek* (ritual bathing) on the *Shivling* with these items is considered auspicious. Although there is no detailed description of Shiva's "meals" in the same way as there is for some other deities, his favorite offerings are mentioned in numerous texts, particularly the *Shiva Purana* and the *Skanda Purana*.
The Significance of *Belpatra*
The practice of offering *Belpatra* during Shiva worship is mentioned in many texts. There is a famous *shloka*:
*Tridalam Trigunākāram Trinetram Cha Trayāyudham |*
*Trijanmapāpasanhāram Ekabilvam Shivārpanam ||*
The meaning of this verse is that the three-leafed *Belpatra* symbolizes Lord Shiva's three eyes and three *Gunas* (attributes). Offering it destroys many of a person's sins.
Devotion is what Shiva loves most
Religious scholars believe that for Lord Shiva, the devotee's sentiment is far more important than the grandeur of the food offering. If a person offers water, *Belpatra* (wood apple leaves), or fruit with a sincere heart, Lord Bholenath becomes pleased. This is why Shiva is considered the most approachable and compassionate deity.
