Cricket will return to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics after a gap of 128 years. The organizers made a big announcement about this on Wednesday. The organizers of the Los Angeles Olympics have decided on the teams for cricket in this multinational event. Six teams will participate in both the women's and men's categories. The matches will be played in T20 format. Six teams will be seen competing for gold, silver, and bronze medals.

Cricket was part of the Olympics in the year 1900

The last time cricket was a part of the Paris Olympics was in 1900. Then a two-day match was played between Great Britain and France. Now it is counted as an unofficial test. However, six teams will be seen playing in the T20 format in the Los Angeles Olympics. Not only this, the organizers have also decided the maximum number of players in a team. The organizers have said that there will be 15 players in a team. A maximum quota of 90 players has been fixed in both men's and women's categories. That is, there will be a maximum of 90 players in six teams.

ICC has 12 regular members

The International Cricket Council currently has 12 regular and 94 associate members. The regular members include Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, Ireland, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Zimbabwe. However, the qualification process for the 2028 Olympics has not been disclosed yet. It is believed that the US will play in it, as they will get the benefit of the host quota. This will mean that apart from the US, five more teams will be able to participate and they will have to go through the qualification process.

Five new sports included

Cricket is one of the five new sports that have been given a place in the Los Angeles Olympics. The International Olympic Association confirmed the inclusion of these five sports in the Los Angeles Olympics in the year 2023. Apart from cricket, these include baseball/softball, flag football, lacrosse, and squash. Meanwhile, the IOC Executive Board on Wednesday approved the schedule of competitions and the quota of players for the Olympic Games 2028. These games will have 22 more medal events than the Paris Olympics 2024.

The IOC has approved a record 351 medal events for the Olympics 2028 but the number of players will remain at 10,500. The number of players also includes 698 players from new sports. For the first time in the history of the Olympic Games, the number of male and female players in team sports will be equal. In other sports, boxing will have the same seven weight categories in the women's category as in the men's.
