Famous lyricist and scriptwriter Javed Akhtar is known for his outspoken statements. He expresses his opinion on the film industry as well as social issues without hesitation. Many times he is targeted by people for his statements, but he always speaks in his outspoken style. In a recent interview, he told why Bollywood celebs, especially big celebs, prefer to remain silent on political matters. He said that they do not avoid speaking, but they are afraid.

Javed Akhtar mentioned a speech by Hollywood actress Meryl Streep at the Golden Globe Awards in 2017. The actress had criticized Donald Trump, who was the President of America at that time. But no income tax raid was conducted on her. Javed said, "Meryl Streep made a statement against the US government, but no income tax raid was conducted on her." Javed Akhtar further said in Kapil Sibal's podcast, "Whether these insecurities are true or not, I do not want to get into that debate. But this is the perception among celebs. If this fear is in someone's heart, then they will worry about ED, CBI, Income Tax raids... that their files will be opened and they will be investigated." Javed Akhtar said, "This fear does not come from within the film industry. They may be in the industry, but they live in the same society. They work like common people. There is just more pomp in this profession. They do not blame others for being silent. I am probably one of the few voices that are speaking, but I understand why others do not speak."
