Parenting Tips: Colds, coughs, and nasal congestion are very common in children. In such cases, most parents think of giving their child steam inhalation to clear their nose and make breathing easier. However, steam given incorrectly can be harmful rather than beneficial for the child. Pediatrician Sandeep Gupta shared a video on this topic on his Instagram handle. In this video, the doctor explained the correct and safe way to give steam to children. Let's learn about it:
What does the doctor say?
According to Dr. Sandeep Gupta, giving steam directly from a steamer to young children is not safe. The very hot steam coming from the steamer can burn the child's face, nose, or eyes. In addition, very hot steam can also damage the delicate lungs of children. Children cannot properly express their discomfort, so the risk increases.
What is the correct and safe way to give steam to children?
The doctor explains that if the child has a blocked nose or a cold, give steam:
Turn on the hot water shower in the bathroom.
Close the bathroom door so that steam accumulates inside.
Once the bathroom is filled with steam, turn off the shower.
Now, hold the child in your arms and stand in the bathroom for only 5 to 7 minutes.
In this way, the child will not be directly exposed to hot steam, but the effect of the steam will gradually work on the nose and respiratory tract.
Things to keep in mind while giving steam:
Never leave the child alone in the bathroom.
Do not give steam for too long; 5-7 minutes is sufficient.
If the child starts crying or becomes restless, immediately take them out.
This way, you can give your child steam correctly and safely. However, if the child has a high fever along with a cold, difficulty breathing, a whistling sound while breathing, or reduced appetite, do not rely on home remedies and contact a doctor immediately.
