Several fasts and festivals are observed during the month of Ashwin, including Durga Puja and Sharadiya Navratri. These festivals are considered auspicious for propitiating Goddess Durga. According to religious belief, worshipping Goddess Durga with a sincere heart during this period dispels all sorrows and hardships in life, bringing auspicious results to the devotee.

People often confuse Durga Puja with Sharadiya Navratri; however, it is worth noting that the cultural traditions, worship rituals, and beliefs associated with these two festivals differ significantly. The festival of Durga Puja is celebrated with great enthusiasm in Eastern India, whereas Sharadiya Navratri is observed in North, West, and Central India. In this article, we will explain in detail the differences between Durga Puja and Sharadiya Navratri.
When will Durga Puja 2026 begin?
According to the Hindu calendar (Panchang), Durga Puja in 2026 will commence on October 16 and conclude on October 21.
Sharadiya Navratri
During the nine days of Sharadiya Navratri, there is special significance in worshipping the nine different forms of the Goddess. Devotees also observe fasts to seek the blessings of Goddess Durga. The ritual of *Ghatsthapana* (invoking the Goddess in a sacred pot) is performed on the first day, and a sacred altar (*Chowki*) is set up for the Goddess. Sharadiya Navratri begins on the *Pratipada* (first day) of the *Shukla Paksha* (waxing phase of the moon) in the month of Ashwin and concludes on *Navami* (the ninth day). *Kanya Pujan* (worship of young girls) is performed on *Ashtami* (the eighth day) and *Navami* (the ninth day) of Navratri.
Durga Puja
This festival celebrates the slaying of the demon Mahishasura by Goddess Durga. Special rituals are performed to worship the Goddess during this time. The festival spans five days. During this period, the traditions of the 'Dhunuchi' dance and 'Sindoor Khela' (performed by women) are observed.

Although Durga Puja begins a day before Sharadiya Navaratri, the main festival spans five days, commencing on the *Shashthi* *tithi* (the sixth day of the lunar fortnight). The *Chandi Path* is recited on the day preceding Sharadiya Navaratri; according to religious belief, this marks the day Goddess Durga begins her journey from Mount Kailash to Earth. Meanwhile, on *Shashthi*, the idol of Goddess Durga is unveiled in the *pandals*, and the *Pran-Pratishtha* (consecration) ritual is performed.
