How to Identify Real ORS: With changing weather, young children are more likely to fall ill. Doctors often recommend giving ORS to young children. However, with many types of ORS available on the market these days, how can you tell if the ORS you're buying is genuine or fake? Many brands label their products with "ORS" but are actually using it as a product name, and these powders or drinks don't contain ORS. Dr. Sandeep Gupta shared a video on Instagram, revealing the true identity of ORS. He also explained when and how to give ORS to a child.

According to Dr. Sandeep Gupta, ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution) is an important medication that helps treat diarrhea and dehydration in children. However, many fake and counterfeit ORS products are available on the market, which can be harmful to children's health. To identify genuine ORS, you need to keep a few things in mind.
In fact, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has banned the use of Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) in the brand names of non-standard food products. Now, only formulas approved by the WHO (World Health Organization) will be labeled ORS.
WHO Guidelines
A genuine ORS packet should be labeled "WHO-recommended formula," meaning it contains the correct balance of sodium, potassium, glucose, and electrolytes. It should also bear the WHO (World Health Organization) seal.
FSSAI should not be written on the label.
Genuine ORS is a medicine, not a food item. Its packaging should not bear the FSSAI logo.
Color and Odor
Genuine ORS should be white or pale yellow in color and odorless. Furthermore, genuine ORS should dissolve easily in water.
When and how to give your child ORS
According to Dr. Sandeep Gupta, ORS should be given to children with diarrhea or dehydration, as it helps replenish water. The amount of ORS should be given based on the child's age and weight.
Give 50-100 ml of ORS to children aged 0-12 months.
Give 100-200 ml of ORS to children aged 1-5 years.
How to give ORS: Dissolve ORS in water and give it to the child with a spoon or cup.
Frequency of giving ORS: Give ORS every 1-2 hours.
