Observing a fast during Navratri is an act of devotion, but individuals managing diabetes or high blood pressure need to exercise great caution during this period. This is because improper management while fasting with these conditions can adversely affect kidney health. Additionally, going without food or fluids for extended periods can have negative health consequences.

**Tips for patients with diabetes and high blood pressure while fasting**
If you have diabetes or high blood pressure and are planning to fast during Navratri, keep the following points in mind:
**Consult your doctor first**
Speak to your doctor before fasting, especially if you frequently experience high blood pressure, uncontrolled diabetes, or kidney-related issues.
**Monitor blood sugar and blood pressure levels**
Check your blood sugar daily and do not ignore any signs of low or high blood pressure.
**Stay hydrated**
While adequate water intake is important every day, pay special attention to drinking enough water while fasting—unless your doctor has advised against it due to kidney or heart conditions.
**Consume kidney-friendly foods**
Include only fresh fruits, vegetables, and healthy foods in your diet, and be mindful of portion sizes. Strictly avoid excessive salt intake, packaged "fasting foods," and fruit juices. If you have kidney issues, limit or avoid foods high in potassium and phosphorus.
**Do not fast without your medication**
Do not alter your medication regimen for diabetes, blood pressure, or kidney conditions simply because you are fasting. It is important to note that certain medications can increase the risk of dehydration or hypoglycemia.

When should you immediately break the fast?
It is best to break the fast if you experience excessive fatigue, fainting, dehydration, vomiting, or conditions like low blood sugar or low blood pressure. Patients with diabetes and hypertension must understand that protecting their kidneys is of utmost importance; therefore, they should consult a nephrologist (kidney specialist) before observing the Navratri fast.
